To determine the color quality of an LED, several key terms and metrics are used to evaluate its performance. These include Color Rendering Index (CRI), Correlated Color Temperature (CCT), chromaticity coordinates, and other advanced measures like TM-30. Here’s a breakdown of each:
Color Rendering Index (CRI) (Basic level)
CRI measures how accurately a light source renders colors of objects compared to a reference source, such as daylight or an incandescent bulb. The CRI scale ranges from 0 to 100, where a higher value indicates better color rendering. A CRI of 80 or above is generally recommended for indoor lighting to ensure colors appear natural and true to life.
PS : In todays market, you can get CRI80 for basic quality, all the way up to CRI98, which CRI to get depends on how much you place importances on the colors projecting onto your laminates,floorings,furniture etc.

TM-30 (Advanced level)
TM-30 is a more comprehensive method for evaluating color rendering, offering two key metrics:
- Fidelity Index (Rf): Measures the similarity of a test light source to a reference source in terms of color accuracy.
- Gamut Index (Rg): Specifies the color range, indicating whether the light source emphasizes or deemphasizes certain hues compared to the reference.
Correlated Color Temperature (CCT)
CCT specifies the perceived color of light emitted by an LED, described in Kelvin (K). It indicates whether the light appears warm (yellowish) or cool (bluish). Common CCT values include:
- 3000K (Warm White): Creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
- 4000K (Cool White): Suitable for general-purpose lighting.
- 6000K (Cool Daylight): Provides a bright, daylight-like appearance, often used in task lighting.

It is measured using Standard Deviation of Color Matching (SDCM), also known as MacAdam ellipses. A lower SDCM value indicates better color consistency, with SDCM 3 or less generally considered acceptable for most applications
